Likay Hulu:
Malayu folk theatre
Intro: Story of Thai Way of Life
The performance begins with warm-up music to capture the audience’s attention and build excitement. In the past, a Wai Khru ceremony was held before competitions between villages, but today, these competitions focus solely on artistic expression and eloquence. Once the chorus completes the warm-up, the lead singer takes the stage to showcase skills through songs of various rhythms, beginning with lyrics that introduce the performance’s purpose before transitioning into the main story.
Concept of the Performance
Likay Hulu, or Dike Hulu, is a traditional folk performance of Malay Muslims in southern Thailand. The script consists of rhythmic songs accompanied by music and clapping. The performance conveys meaning through gestures and rhythmic movements, such as waving hands to symbolize a call for protection of the sea. A clapping gesture mimics the movement of fish, illustrating their struggle to survive threats like bomb fishing, drag nets, and push nets. The act of pulling a rope together represents cooperation and unity, using the fishing rope—a vital tool for local fishermen—as a symbol of collective strength within the community.
