Muay Boran:
Bare Knuckle Boxing before Muay Thai
Intro: The Story of Muay Boran
Muay Boran is an ancient Thai martial art in which fighters wrap their fists with ropes. This self-defense technique has been passed down through generations, utilizing fists, knees, and elbows in combat. Today, raw cloth is used instead of ropes. The skills of Muay Boran have historically been combined with weaponry for self-defense and national protection. Before ascending the throne, King Taksin the Great, previously the Ruler of Tak, frequently organized boxing competitions, leading to the rise of many skilled fighters.
Concept of the Performance
The performance of Muay Boran differs from traditional Thai boxing by incorporating elements of Thai arts and culture, particularly Khon. The story is presented through a battle between Thotsakan and Hanuman, with each side sending fighters into the ring based on their leader’s command. This adaptation enhances the performance, making it more engaging and distinct from ancient Thai boxing.
